Scarlet Day of Service is a day-long event for students to give back to their community by engaging in meaningful service, and it is also the largest community service event in all of New Jersey. Get the inside scoop from our two assistant directors who were in charge of the logistics and community partners for this past Scarlet Day of Service!
What is it like managing the logistics for such a large event?
Planning logistics was a great opportunity that came with a lot of responsibility. Personally, the most challenging part about logistics was ensuring that we ordered the right number of supplies for the event to run smoothly. This included tables, tents, stage, lights, and food orders. It also never hurts to have a back up plan too- the forecast was calling for RAIN! Due to the forecasted weather we had to change the overall plan and move the whole thing indoors. Different supplies were needed, the flow of the volunteers was disrupted, but overall the day went well. Scarlet Day of Service is one of my favorite events and I loved the amount of leadership and autonomy I got to use. Working with the rest of the members of the Community Service committee and other members of RUPA really made the whole day run smoothly.

How do you choose volunteer sites/community partners for Scarlet Day of Service?
Community partners and volunteer sites are selected based on organizations we’ve worked with in the past. The key to providing engaging and meaningful service is forming strong partnerships with various service organizations. When we reach out to each partner, we ask for job descriptions, a list of required supplies, and the number of volunteers needed. We also work with the site to make sure that the jobs students will be participating in are services the community has designated as “needed.” Each year our list of community partners grows and more students are able to get different service experience.
