Hey what’s up Scarlet Knights! My name is Anthony and I am the Director of Arts and Culture. I am currently a Junior and this is my second year on RUPA Council. One of the biggest events the Arts and Culture committee puts on is the annual Masquerade Ball at the Zimmerli Art Museum. We started planning for this all the way back in November. We threw around some ideas for themes and eventually decided on a vintage circus theme. Over winter break, I had a few meetings with the Zimmerli staff to go over the logistics of what we wanted the event to look like. From there my committee started reaching out to vendors. We contacted Rutgers Dining for catering, Hurricane Productions for the DJ and lighting and Miller’s Rentals for tables and other event related items.
After that was all in place, the team and I started coming up with ideas on how we were going to decorate the Zimmerli to look like a circus. We reached out to a local events company to drape fabric in the dance floor area to look like a circus tent. We also came up with designs to create vintage circus posters and spent countless hours in Hobby Lobby to buy all different pieces that you would find at an old traveling circus. We bought old suitcases and feathers and little animal figures. Not to mention the yards and yards and yards of fabric. It was a lot of fun to see our vision come to life.
Then we thought, what would a circus be without some performers? So we contacted our circus people right away (because what major events office wouldn’t have a circus company in their contacts…?). Some of the acts included a mime and a sword swallower! They were huge hits with the crowd.
The night was so much fun and I couldn’t be more proud of my team. There were so many moving parts and they all handled it like superstars! It will be an experience we will never forget. I love my Arts and Culture team! Shoutout to Nicole, Mikio, Shirley, Rachel and Rachael for being the best Assistant Directors EVER!!!
That’s all for this RUPA Insider!
